Occasionally I stumble upon polarizing issues, and then promptly beat them into submission on this blog. I’ve got some pet peeves (yes, I have stupidpeopleitis… therapy helps… a little…), and some easy targets (outages), and whatnot. I didn’t start this blog as a popularity contest… I’m quote happy being a ‘behind-the-scenes’ guy. Hard to believe, I know…. In the last few weeks I’ve been getting more and more emails and I was perusing some interesting ideas over on the idea exchange earlier today and it all came together:

If Salesforce.com is selling Customer Relationship Management software (it’s core business by any definition) they why do they constantly hinder the users efforts to maintain a good (clean) relationship by ‘branding’ all over the place?

Case in point - if you’re a Bandwidth.com customer, do you really care if Bandwidth.com uses Salesforce.com? Do you care of Cisco does? Does their use of Salesforce.com make Cisco’s routers more stable, Bandwidth.com’s VoIP service sound clearer? Should the fact that your company uses Salesforce.com change the way your customer should interact with you? (more…)

“Survey Says….” Winter ‘07 Preliminary Scoring…

As I previously covered in my “Dare to Dream” blog entry I outlined a scoring system for the Winter ‘07 release. Now that Dreamforce has passed, and hopefully those at Salesforce.com are well into the post-Dreamforce recovery period we can take a look ahead into the new release. Scott Hemmeter over at Arrowpointe wrote a nice summary of the announced features over on his blog.

I’ve taken most of the publically available information and added it to my scoring spreadsheet, available as a PDF: Winter ‘07 Preliminary Release Scoring

Please note that I’ve generally erred toward a higher score, with a few exceptions, and I have not gone through my list of bugs yet. It would be premature to speculate as to what they may, or may not, have fixed until it is finally released. As the release approaches I will post my excel spreadsheet so that everyone can score the release for themselves.

SFDC Marketing Kudos and Vendor Lock-In… What it really means, really.

OMFG - If I read one more blog entry this week that has a link to the ‘Apex isn’t vendor lock-in’ blog post I’m gonna hurl. But first….

I gotta give some kudos to Marc (it’s with a “c” guys, not a “k”) and the Marketing Team over at SFDC. The aggregate hype and spin that was spewing forth from this years Dreamforce was nothing short of, Salesforce-esque. In one move you announced your most important announcement ever (so far), completely overshadowed the next release, and hyped a feature that won’t go into beta until 2007. But what really impresses me (and I’m actually not being sarcastic - in this sentence) is the number of press pundits, bloggers, and tech writers who have completely missed the boat and tied Apex solely to the Winter ‘07 release. So I’ve got this client who is a customer of a company currently using Salesforce.com under the “Communications & Media” category. The services being provided to my client are more then over their heads so I’m acting as point of contact thru implementation. (Not an uncommon thing really.)

Unfortunately this has been one of those Murphy-like projects — if it can go wrong it will, and in the defense of the C&M company not all the problems have been their fault. But if I get one more SFDC-based email template from these guys I’m gonna flip my top. (more…)

So my mailbox has been delluged lately with comment spam. Is Viagara, Cialis, and all those medications really that popular or hard to get that people actually buy it illegally over the internet?

So after watching a few sneak through the spam filter I’m seriously considering a few measures, either….

  • Really cranking up the spam filter
  • Forcing moderation on all unauthenticated posts. (You can create logins if you want to bypass this)

So why am I bothering to write this? I want to let people know that while it may appear that comments are moderated (filtered) the only alterations made to comments are out and out deleteions — and only for spam. The last ditch option is to just disable comments, as I know Simon has on his blog. If there are dissenting options to my ideas, comments or code, I’d honestly like to hear them.

Down the with the spammers….

I tend to try to keep in touch with the news, buzz, whatnot, that surrounds Salesforce.com, and I’ve been keeping a close eye on a new blog, Inside The Force allegedly written by a SFDC employee calling him/serself Omega.

For the record - it’s not me. And, in a Steven Colbert (sarcastic) kind of way, I’m getting pissed that he/she’s taking all my ideas and material. The last entry really got my blood racing, regarding a quote from Marc Benioff in a BusinessWeek article:

Wait a second…
So as a public company, the company’s primary mission is to increase share value…
and if sales leads spike when we have outages…
and more leads lead to more sales…
and more sales improves share value…
Shouldn’t we have more outages?

Seriously, who the hell is this guy? I read that article earlier today as well and was halfway through an email to Marc Benioff myself on the exact same topic and I read that post in my feed reader.

Now this isn’t the first time this guy/gal hijacked one of my thoughts / ideas… In this post about trust.salesforce.com he/she writes:

Here’s what my dream list includes for trust.salesforce.com…
1) Uptime stats for the last 7, 30, 90, 180, and 365 days.
2) Average speed stats for the last 7, 30, 90, 180, 365 days.
3) Maximum and minimum average speed time on a daily basis

Hey bud, get your own ideas and stop stealing mine. You’re an SFDC employee, you’re ‘inside the bubble’ and if you’ve been working there any amount of time you should be thinking like everyone else. Go watch THX-1138 and remember to take your pills.

All sarcasm aside….

Whoever the hell you are - you need a promotion. Not one of those, “promote him out of harms way” ones either… Disesention and healthy debate are good things now and again, through them a working understanding of the other side of the coin can be learned, and it benefits us all. Keep up the good work.

Over on SalesForceWatch.com Mark posted the following news piece about the Google OneBox integration:

As noted yesterday, Google will be announcing Google OneBox today, a new feature for the Google Search Appliance making it easier for users to find data in corporate applications.’ Using Salesforce OneBox modules, users will be able to search across the entire enterprise, including Salesforce.com, for data.

I’m very interested to hear from any Google Appliance customers (sorry, Google Mini doesn’t count) if you’ve gotten this working. Drop a comment, or send me an email.

(Yes, the open API for the OneBox stuff is very intregueing but the module definitions seem to be ‘missing’ something… Of course it could be me…)

The Salesforce.com (SFDC) Heretic was born out of a post on the SFDC Developer forums by SFDC employee Dave Carrol (DevAngel) who in this post wrote:

Now, Daroz has been preaching heresy (def: A person who holds controversial opinions, especially one who publicly dissents from the officially accepted dogma of the Roman Catholic Church Salesforce.com.) about injecting script into various objects.

Over the last few months the volume of email I have received from various other Salesforce.com customers has risen steadily. While I truely believe that the Salesforce.com platform is one of, if not the most customizable CRM packages going, sometimes (ok, most of the time) I tend to push it past it’s limits. From time to time this has put me quite at odds with the developers and engineers at SFDC as I exploit hidden links and inject script onto their pages, all in an effort at making things easier or achieving more functionality. Several friends of mine have been prodding me to start a blog to post some thoughts and ideas, things that you’d never see on the AppXchange. That coupled with my increasing volume of mail, and increase in workload from other projects finally kicked me to start up this blog.

Most of what I intend to post will be technical in nature, ideas and methods to do various things on the platform. From time to time I will, as I have in the past, opine on the state of the platform, development, or industry. I may throw up a news bit or two, but for the most part I’ll leave that to Mark over at SalesForceWatch.com.
